The Surf Shadows have been
playing rockin' classics and surf sounds around
the Ballarat region for the
past ten years.
Our initial
quest was to play instrumental surf music,
reminiscent of early 60's bands including
the Shadows, Dick Dale, the Ventures, the
Surfaris, the Chantays--we don't try to play
Beach Boys!
Over the
years we have incorporated a lot more
vocals, once again paying tribute to rock
and roll bands of the 60s-70s. The advent of
the double bass into the band provides the
opportunity to do some swing-style and up
tempo blues numbers.

A feature
of our live performances is to segue tunes
that have a loose synergy to form a medley,
just to keep everyone confused!

The Surf
Shadows can arrange the music to suit your
occasion - play mellow for the sit down part
of the evening and rev it up to get you
dancing the night away. All in all it's
always a fun night - some folk even have a
"surf" or "beach" theme for their night
which is always a hoot.

Members
Bruce
Schmidt--lead guitar. (played on an
amplified acoustic Gibson, although you
would not pick it from the sound!) Bruce
grew up in Mildura, where the waves on the
Murray were mainly caused by paddle
steamers.
Johnny
Ducardus--guitar and vocals. Johnny does the
more improvised jazz-influenced solos, and
gained his surf experience on Lake
Wendouree, Ballarat, before it dried up and
caught fire.
Kev
Zibell--basses and vocals. Like Bruce, a
Mildura boy, who spent many a summer day on
Apex beach.
Dave
Dahlenburg--a drummer from Nhill, where the
surf is wild and free (if only there was
water in the swamp!)
